History of April Foolâs Day
It is well known around the world that every April 1st of every year is another day that many people will have extra fun in their lives. That is because today is April Foolâs Day or known internationally as April Foolâs Day. Originally, April 1st was the New Yearâs Day of the French people in the 16th century until around 1562, Pope Gregory or Pope Gregory XIII ordered Christians around the world to celebrate the New Year together by setting January 1st as the international New Yearâs Day. When the communication of information between each other was not developed, stories could not be spread to each person as quickly as in this era. People in the remote countryside of France did not receive much new information. Therefore, they still celebrated the New Yearâs Day on April 1st as before. This made those who were modern, did not fall behind or were in developing areas, ridiculing them as stupid. They also tried to trick this group of people into believing in unfounded information for fun.
Since then, April 1st has become National Foolâs Day, where people can prank each other by making up untrue stories to trick others into believing them, and then the truth will be revealed at the end. There are some conditions: the stories used to prank people must not cause bloodshed, and the person being tricked must not be angry because they understand that today is a special day that is exempted for one day.
The truth about National Foolâs Day
Some sources tell the story about April Foolâs Day that April Foolâs Day started with the ancient Romans, who held the Cerealia festival, which was usually held at the beginning of April. According to legend, a god named Ceres heard the echo of his daughter Prosperpina shouting that she was being taken underground by the god Pluto. The god Ceres followed his daughterâs voice and soon discovered that following the echo was not smart, as if he had been tricked and believed those things.
In addition, there are other stories that April Foolâs Day originated from the spring season, when it is said that during this season, young men and women go out to find love and it is the season when plants grow well. As animals seek mates this month (April), the priests will try to trick the evil spirits from hindering the love between young people, the growth of plants, and the finding of mates among animals. The chanting ceremony is held during April, which began in the United States. Later, it was spread to England and spread to other countries.
