World Environment Day is a day when we should do something for our environment, which is getting worse every day. It can be seen from various phenomena such as melting snow in the Arctic, floods, earthquakes, or rising temperatures. These results are all the result of humans destroying nature, destroying the good environment. This has led world agencies to establish World Environment Day.

วันสิ่งแวดล้อมโลก

The origin of World Environment Day was to raise awareness of the global environmental crisis. It was decided to hold a general conference in Stockholm from June 5-16, 1972, hosted by the Swedish government. The conference was called the “UN Conference on the Human Environment”, which was attended by over 1,200 participants from 113 countries, as well as over 1,500 observers from government agencies, the United Nations, and various media outlets. The purpose of the conference was to jointly find solutions to the environmental problems that countries were facing. As a result of the conference, there were several agreements, such as the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. Governments of various countries accepted the agreements from the conference to establish environmental agencies in their countries. Therefore, to commemorate the beginning of cooperation from many countries in the field of environment, the United Nations declared June 5 of every year as World Environment Day. The United Nations Environment Programme is responsible for monitoring and evaluating important changes in the environment. Including stimulating changes for the better. And in order for the goal to be achieved, the following methods have been established:

Create awareness in learning about the environment and provide education to the general public and students.

Provide academic support and disseminate stories about the environment to stimulate changes for the better.

Strengthen the awareness of environmental problems in institutions and their people.

In addition, there was an agreement from the conference to establish an environmental agency in their country. Thailand enacted the Environmental Promotion and Conservation Act B.E. 2518 and established the National Environment Board on February 12, B.E. 2518, which was an important starting point for environmental operations in Thailand. Later in 1992, the structure of the National Environment Board was changed to 3 agencies:

1. Pollution Control Department

2. Department of Environmental Quality Promotion

3. Office of Environmental Policy and Planning, Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment. In terms of educational institutions, environmental courses have been taught in many universities, which is an important step in environmental awareness. In addition, the media has promoted more awareness of environmental problems. Each year, World Environment Day has different topics.
