What is International Women's Day and what is its significance?

International Women's Day March 8 of every year

This day was originally called "International Women's Day". Women come out to demand justice in society and in the labor sector to celebrate and give importance to women's rights equally.

History of International Women's Day

Since the past, women have been responsible for taking care of housework. However, during the Industrial Revolution, female workers who went out to work outside the home were oppressed, both in terms of being hired with wages that did not match the working hours, including inappropriate welfare. Some were sexually oppressed, physically abused, and even fired from their jobs when they were pregnant.

On March 8, 1857, a textile mill in the United States, 119 female workers died from an arson attack on the textile mill due to a protest demanding the rights of working-class women to increase their wages. In 1907, textile mill workers protested again because they were working for more than 16-17 hours a day, with no holidays and no social security, which caused their health to deteriorate and many women died from working. And those who were pregnant were fired.

Clara Zetkin

A woman who played a role in establishing International Women's Day. She is a person who called for equality for female workers. She was a Marxist and existentialist political activist. Born on July 5, 1857 (1857 AD), she graduated from the Leipzig Normal College, married and had two children, but later she was widowed and became a political fighter, the leader of the women's social group, and opposed World War I.

March 8, 1907, was the year that Clara proposed March 8 of every year as "International Women's Day".

March 8, 1910, the Women's Workers' Assembly of 17 countries called on employers to allocate fair time to women workers: 1) 8 hours of work per day, 2) 8 hours of personal time for learning, and 3) 8 hours of rest, including protection for child labor and pregnant women.

In 1911, the United Nations organized International Women's Day on March 8 in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. More than one million men and women attended. Later, many countries joined. Including Russia, which organized International Women's Day in 1913.

International Women's Day in Thailand

International Women's Day in Thailand was first held in 1989 by the National Committee for the Promotion and Coordination of Women (NCPC) under the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Prime Minister's Office, to disseminate and publicize to the public to know and understand the importance of International Women's Day. Various labor laws for women have been adjusted to be in line with the format of being a member of the United Nations.

International Women's Day in Thailand is held on March 8 of every year. Therefore, there is an event to give awards to women who have benefited society in various fields, such as Dr. Pornthip Rojanasunan, a forensic doctor who helped solve a famous case using DNA testing techniques, and Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan, a female politician who played a role in spreading politics.

Towards women's understanding

International Women's Day flowers

The yellow mimosa is the International Women's Day flower. It means the gentleness of women but is strong because it is a flower that grows during the winter. Even though the weather is cold, it can survive the winter. Some countries use other flowers instead of International Women's Day, such as tulips and roses.
